Sen. Harris Raises $161K for Abortion Rights Groups

Sen. Kamala Harris, D-Calif., said she raised over $161,000 for women’s rights groups after the Alabama Senate approved a bill blocking almost all abortions in the state.

Harris, who is running for president, made the fundraising announcement Thursday on Twitter.

She wrote: “Incredibly proud that together we were able to raise over $161K yesterday for women’s rights groups who are on the front lines of the fight to defend women’s healthcare & access to abortion. It’s because of your support that we’ll continue to fight back.”

The measure was signed into law by Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey on Wednesday. It makes performing an abortion a felony in nearly all cases.

The Hill noted Harris had sent out an email, urging supporters to donate to four abortion organizations and a women’s rights group.

“Threatening to punish doctors who provide abortion care with up to 99 years of jail time,” the email said. “This is happening in Alabama – in our country – in the year 2019.”
